Inspect[ | ]

You whistle when you examine the chest: it is almost in perfect state and its craftsmanship is exquisite. The antlers have been polished and circled in gold. The intricate carving shows great mastery of woodworking. Even the choice of wood is luxurious. Makes you wonder if the inside matches the outside.

You won't let a heavy golden padlock prevent you from opening the chest!

  • Pick the Lock.
Failure
You sit on the sand and start working on the padlock. It takes you time but you eventually unlock it. When you open it, an orange mist comes out. It burns your eyes and throat. You fall backwards. WATER, you need WATER, NOW. When your sight gets clearer, you notice the trap didn't only incapacitate you, but it also ruined the contents. You salvage whatever you can.

Your grandfather always said "if it ain't opening, hit till it does".

Failure
You aim at the padlock and smash it again and again and again... till it eventually breaks. You happily open the chest. An orange mist comes out. It burns your eyes and throat. You fall backwards. WATER, you need WATER, NOW. When your sight gets clearer, you notice two pouches on the other side of the padlock. One empty, with remnants of orange dust. One filled with an ominous liquid. It's slowly pouring on the treasure. Looks like you managed to also break the mechanism releasing the second trap. You quickly loot the treasure before the liquid taints it.

+ Heimdall's Horn Heimdall's Horn
Success
You take your weapon and smash several hits on the chest. It's a shame to destroy such a masterpiece but, well, it won't open itself. You hear glass shattering noises as the wood splits open under your blow. Oops... you overdid it. You check the state of the contents. Several parchments and broken arrows are drenched in coloured liquids coming fromt he various vials you broke. Damn! You can still retrieve a few things. When you touch the soaked items your skin sometimes burns, sometimes feels numb... There were some nasty potions in here.

Relevant Skills: Exploration

Something bugs you... The chest seems to have been abandoned not that long ago... in plain sight...

  • Search for anything unusual.
Failure
It's not necessarily a trap, is it? Maybe something happened to the owners. They took a break and were attacked? You look for clues on what happened. You venture far away from the chest but still find nothing. At least it means it's not a trap. With that in mind, you walk back to the treasure coffer. While you were away from the chest, someone smashed it open and looted everything valuable inside. Damn! That should teach you about leaving a valuable treasure unguarded!
+ Depression Depression Fatigue Fatigue
Success
You fear an ambush... You carefully search the surroundings but find no one alive. What you do find though, are two dead Norsemen and a dead furry creature you never saw before. From the looks of the scene, you believe the one with trousers down was relieving himself when he was attacked by the big unknown creature. His friend killed the beast but not before suffering a fatal wound to the abdomen. They must have died two days ago, at most. That means they won't mind if you take their belongings, will they?
